- Introduce you and your family
Hello! My name is Kayla Timmons, and I am the woman behind Captions to Encourage. My family consists of my husband, Nathan, and my rambunctious and wonderful son, Rueben (we call him Rue).
- Share about your business / community and how did you start it?
When the whole world shut down in March 2020, Captions to Encourage was born. At first, it was a writing outlet for me. Back in college, I used to write for editorials targeted towards the college experience. As I got older, had a family, and grew out of the college narratives, I needed something else. This time, I wanted to branch out and try something completely out of my comfort zone. The COVID-19 pandemic was the catalyst for the Instagram account and for the Etsy business that came shortly after. Captions to Encourage focuses on putting truth and encouragement on products that women will see every day. I want women to feel empowered, encouraged, and reminded of their worth each time they view a piece from Captions on their living room wall, office bulletin board, or the side of their water bottle.
- Were you ever discouraged from pursuing your career after being a mom either from your close family or friends? How did you overcome this?
Because I already teach full time as an ENL (English as a New Language) teacher, I felt ridiculous beginning something so time-consuming. As a type three enneagram personality (where are my enneagram people at?), I feared that I would neglect my one year old son with my drive to do well with Captions to Encourage. The opposite is actually true. This business ended up being what I needed during a season of mental health struggles and pandemic chaos.
- What’s your biggest struggle being an entrepreneur + mom?
Being an entrepreneur and a mom can be tough because I often reach for the impossible—perfection. Working on a small business and parenting a toddler can be tough on the perfectionist’s brain. I want to be good at all the things. But, it’s not entirely attainable. I’m learning a great deal about wearing so many hats and staying mentally and emotionally healthy.
- Has being a mom or helping you in pursuing your dreams/passion in any way?
When I became a mom, my whole perspective on the impact one can have on life changed. When I became a mom, I wanted to teach my son how to love others well through my choices and actions. With that purpose, I have been pushed to pursue and grow with Captions to Encourage. For any mom who is wanting to pursue her dream, I want to encourage you to go for it. Our littles are watching. One day, they’ll find the same courage to pursue their calling because they watched us fearlessly do the same.
- What's the most rewarding part of being a mom?
One of the most rewarding parts of being a mom is watching your small human interact with others—and knowing that you’ve had an influence with how they treat others. Watching Rue love on other kiddos, making them feel noticed, makes me excited for his generation and all the things they will do.
- What's the hardest part of being a mom?
On the flip side, one of the hardest parts of being a mom is sacrificing bits of yourself. Inevitably, there are things we have to loosen the grip on and give up. Being in a community of moms, even if really small, can be encouraging with the hard parts of mama hood.
- How have you been able to pursue goals/dreams/passion outside of motherhood?
My husband has played an enormous role with how I’ve been able to pursue dreams outside of motherhood. He reminds me of who I was before I became a mama, and he nudges me to reconcile it with who I am now. Because of him, I am able to do crazy things like Captions to Encourage while being a mama and a full-time career woman.
- Any encouragement or advice for other moms?
Mama, my encouragement to you is to find community somewhere. I would not have been able to begin Captions to Encourage without all the pockets of community I’ve been a part of over the years. Having other people to support you, and speak truth into you, is so important. Captions to Encourage is meant to be a place that offers up community that encourages. I hope that you can feel a sense of community in that small space of Instagram and Etsy if you cannot find it elsewhere. I’d love to connect and encourage you there, also. Remember that despite how you feel right now, you are doing awesome, Mama.
